Medieval Towns and Cities
La Roche Bernard
10 minutes from the gites by car
Thought by some to have been founded by Bernhart (Strong as a Bear) the Viking, La Roche Bernard is situated on the banks of the beautiful River Vilaine, which snakes its way up to Redon. From the port – which offers boat-hire, a sailing school, river cruises (optional 5-course meal) and several restaurants – the flower-filled, cobbled streets wind their way up the rocky promontory. Designated a "Petite Cité de Caractère", the town offers all the necessary facilities (shops, indoor swimming pool, restaurants, vets etc.) and hosts a vibrant market each Thursday morning, plus an evening Artists' Market every Monday during the summer.

This is the swimming pool at La Roche Bernard. During the summer part of the roof swings open to allow 'open air' swimming.

Vannes
35 minutes by car
With its quaint, half-timbered cottages, cobbled streets, ramparts, stunning gardens, port and impressive cathedral the city of Vannes is a must.
The ancient "lavoir" – where women came to wash their laundry in the river Marle - was still in use during the last century! It offered such mod-cons as a roofed shelter with fireplaces in which to heat the river-water for washing!
Vannes is host to an impressive twice-weekly market (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and offers a range of special events and fêtes throughout the year.
A visit to the Aquarium océanographique et tropical and Le Jardin aux Papillons (free-flying tropical butterflies) is also recommended.
