This year we decided that we would profit from living near to a beautiful wide river - The Vilaine- and buy ourselves a boat. The idea being to sell our caravan to cover the cost. The van, at time of writing however is still with us - best laid plans and all that! |
We had a good look around many boat yards & in many magazines before making the final decision. We decided that this type of small yacht was just right for sailing on 'our' river. It was built in France by 'Janneau'. This saiing yacht was in a chandlers yard in Vannes. |

Elaine found this yacht, called a 'Love Love' advertised in a chandlers in Vannes. Despite her 31 years she is in very good condition (er, the yacht that is!) and came with all the required bits to give her '5th category' . This means she is good for sailing up to 6 miles from land. Having decided to buy this boat, came the problem of sailing her back into the Vilaine! |
Once purchased I had to get a coat of Anti-Fouling paint on the hull plus anti-rust & anti foul on the keel. I did this with a little help & later that day 'Our Yacht' was put into the water & we motored 5 minutes into the port of Vannes (South Brittany) and moored up. A few days later, with the help of our good friend Gordon (who is very experienced at yacht sailing) we set of from Vannes, via the Golf of Morbihan - fantastic scenery - out to sea & along to the estuary of the River Vilaine. At Arzal we had to negotiate the river lock (Barrage) which can cope with many boats so is quite an experience, before continuing to the beautiful port of La Roche Bernard to our new pontoon mooring. The voyage took from 0800 leaving home by car (our daughter Cheryl dropped us off en-route to work in Vannes) until about 2000 hrs when Cheryl picked us up from La Roche. All in all a fantastic day. |

Here we are, on the river sailing'. |
Our yacht is called 'Rienkanoux' which is 'a play on words' but translated means 'just for us' - altogether now...... 'Ahh'! |

And look, she goes the other way as well! |
As you can see we fly the French flag, this is a requirement as the boat is French & French registered. We had'nt realised that we had left one of the fenders out until we saw this shot. Shoddy Skippering - not properly prepared for 'sea'. |

We were tacking here on a 'reach', probably making about 7 knots. It looks as though I am about to go overboard having been hit by the boom, but if you look carefully the jib (foresail) has caught on the mast and I was trying to un- hook it. These sails are the originals you can see the heart on the main, identifying her as a Love Love. She came with a new set of sails including a Spinnaker. We intend to put the new set on soon, as these 'originals' have become a little tatty over the years. |
